Just as youthful kids enjoy being recognized so do adults. But corporate awards and plaques motivate adults to become better at what they do? Are adults beyond the “look what I did” mentality? Most will most likely tell you that winning a trophy is not important to them, but they will acknowledge it is still a nice feeling. The work place may be a different story. It is much more competitive. However, many companyes will try to recognize those employees who stay out from the rest by carrying out outstanding work. Does such recognition help or hinder employees? There are a number of views on this, both optimistic and adverse. As stated earlier, most folks enjoy being recognized for their achievements. It gives them a feeling of being respectd. It lets them know that they do good work. On the other hand, those who have not been recognized may become disgruntled because in their minds they have worked just as hard and are also deserving of recognition. When this is the case it can cause some difficulties in the workplace. It is very important that if a company wants to recognize its employees their selection procedure must be transparent. The best way to achieve this is to have the employees themselves, provided with the appropriate info, make the choices. Yes, irrespective of our age, we all like to be recognized for our achievements. And the presentation of trophies and awards is definitely a good way to do this. It can motivate others to improve their efforts.
